September has been a wonderful start to our kindergarten journey! We are getting to know one another, learning our classroom routines, and building the foundational skills that will support us throughout the school year. Our kindergarteners are learning how to be independent learners, kind classmates, and problem-solvers while developing their early reading, writing, and math skills.
Building Our Reading Foundations
We are working hard on phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and letter sounds. Students are learning to listen carefully for sounds in words, identify beginning sounds, and connect letters with the sounds they represent.
We have also begun blending sounds together to prepare students to read simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. As we move forward, students will have many opportunities to practice hearing, saying, blending, reading, and writing sounds and words.
How can you help at home?
· Practice identifying letters and saying their sounds.
· Ask your child, “What sound do you hear at the beginning of ___?”
· Have your child stretch out and blend simple words such as sat, map, tap, and cat.
· Read together every day and talk about the letters and sounds you notice.
· Encourage your child to write letters and simple words using the sounds they know.
A note about our alphabet: While we review the alphabet every day, I will not be introducing letters in alphabetical order. We will soon be reading and writing CVC words, so I am intentionally introducing a combination of consonants and vowels that will allow students to begin building and reading words as quickly as possible.
Growing Together
Kindergarten is about much more than academics! We are learning how to cooperate, take turns, listen to one another, solve problems, and work together. Students are practicing how to express their ideas, navigate small disagreements, and find solutions with their classmates.
At home, you can support this growth by asking, “What could you do?” when your child encounters a problem. Give them opportunities to practice taking turns, sharing materials, making choices, and finding solutions independently.
Writing: My Name & More!
We are beginning to develop our kindergarten writing habits! Students are practicing proper letter formation, pencil control, and writing their names.
Please practice writing your child's first AND last name at home. Encourage your child to use correct letter formation and to write their name independently whenever possible.
Math: Sorting, Comparing & Describing
Our first math unit is all about looking closely at the world around us, describing objects, and noticing how they are alike and different.
Students are learning to:
· Use positional words such as above, behind, below, beside, in front of, and next to.
· Describe where objects are located.
· Identify and describe the attributes of objects.
· Compare objects by length and height.
· Use mathematical language such as long/longer, short/shorter, and tall/taller.
· Sort and group objects based on common attributes.
· Explain the rule they used to sort objects.
· Count objects within sorted groups and compare the groups.
How can you help at home?
Math is everywhere! Ask your child questions such as:
· “Can you put the toy beside the book?”
· “Which object is longer?”
· “Which one is shorter?”
· “Can you find three things that are the same color?”
· “How did you decide to put these objects together?”
· “Which group has more? Which has fewer?”
These simple conversations help children develop the mathematical vocabulary and thinking skills they will use throughout kindergarten.
